A 28 year old man was arrested in Antwerp after allegedly threatening Jewish residents with a hammer, knocking a man’s hat off and shoving passersby in the city’s Jewish quarter.

Belgian soldiers stationed to protect Jewish institutions intervened, restrained the suspect and held him until police arrived. No injuries were reported.

Police said the suspect is known from previous offenses, including public nuisance and drug related incidents. The increased security presence in Antwerp follows a rise in antisemitic incidents across Europe.
