NEW YORK, N.Y. (July 20, 2026) — Federal agents and local law enforcement personnel mobilized rapidly outside a major government facility in Lower Manhattan on Monday morning following an explosive detonation near the entrance of 26 Federal Plaza.

The security incident unfolded around 8:30 a.m. when an incendiary device, reportedly consisting of commercial fireworks placed inside a street trash receptacle, went off outside the multi-story complex. The facility houses high-profile regional headquarters for multiple federal agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and federal immigration courts.

Following the blast, armed tactical officers deployed quickly from the main concourse to secure the perimeter. Officers with the Federal Protective Service moved swiftly to take a male suspect into custody on site without further incident. Emergency responders from the local fire department arrived shortly thereafter to extinguish minor residual flames resulting from the explosion.

Municipal law enforcement confirmed that early reports of active gunfire during the incident were inaccurate, clarifying that no shots were fired during the disturbance. Out of an abundance of caution, authorities evacuated portions of the building and established a wide security cordoning surrounding Lafayette Street and Worth Street while hazardous device technicians and forensic teams thoroughly searched the vicinity.
