Assemblyman Eichenstein Urges State Review of Mamdani’s Netanyahu Arrest Statements

Jul 20, 2026·2 min read

NEW YORK (VINnews) — A New York state lawmaker is asking the state’s attorney general to examine whether New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s public comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could violate state law.

State Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein announced Monday that he sent a letter to Letitia James requesting a review of Mamdani’s statements about the possibility of arresting Netanyahu if the Israeli leader were to visit New York City.

In the letter, Eichenstein argued that while public officials have the right to express political opinions, they cannot direct or attempt to influence law enforcement to arrest a specific individual without legal authority. He asked James’ office to determine whether Mamdani’s comments warrant further review under New York law governing official conduct by public officials.

The request follows comments Mamdani made over the weekend in which he reiterated his support for enforcing an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu. The court has accused Netanyahu of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza. Netanyahu and the Israeli government deny the allegations.

The United States is not a member of the ICC and does not recognize the court’s jurisdiction over U.S. or Israeli officials.

Responding to questions Monday, Mamdani said his administration would act in accordance with applicable laws.

“My administration will follow all applicable local laws,” Mamdani told reporters. “That is our commitment.”

The dispute comes amid heightened political debate over Netanyahu’s potential visit to New York for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly and follows criticism from President Donald Trump, who said Sunday that Netanyahu would not be arrested while visiting the United States.
