New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani renewed his remarks about potentially arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits New York, despite President Trump stating that Netanyahu would not face arrest while in the United States.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mamdani pointed to the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Netanyahu, saying it should be treated seriously.

“When it comes to Benjamin Netanyahu, we’re speaking about someone who’s the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant,” Mamdani said. He added that the warrant alleges crimes against humanity and war crimes, and accused Netanyahu of being “the architect of the genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.”

Mamdani argued that his position is based on what he described as the public record rather than his personal opinion, saying the same standard should apply to anyone facing an ICC arrest warrant, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The mayor emphasized that his administration would act only within the limits of the law.

“Our administration will follow all applicable local laws,” Mamdani said. “That is our commitment.”

His latest comments come after he recently revealed that he has been consulting with city legal officials about whether any legal authority exists to detain Netanyahu should the Israeli leader travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September.

President Trump, however, said Netanyahu would not be arrested in the United States, rejecting the possibility amid the ongoing debate over the ICC warrant.
