JERUSALEM (VINnews) — An 80-year-old man killed when a residential balcony collapsed onto a bakery in Jerusalem has been identified as Barry (Bari) Levit, authorities and family members said Tuesday.

Levit was trapped beneath the rubble after the balcony of a private home collapsed onto a commercial building on KKL Street in Jerusalem’s Shaarei Chesed neighborhood. Rescue crews extricated him from the debris and rushed him to a hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

He is survived by his wife, three children and grandchildren. His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday evening at Har HaMenuchot Cemetery in Jerusalem.

Three other people suffered minor injuries, including an approximately 80-year-old woman and two 16-year-olds. Emergency medical teams also treated three people for anxiety at the scene.

According to initial findings, residents and neighbors had alerted authorities hours before the collapse after noticing the balcony appeared to be sinking. Police and municipal officials inspected the site, and an engineering professional reportedly recommended installing support scaffolding and carrying out stabilization work because of safety concerns.

Those reinforcement measures had not yet begun when the balcony gave way, causing the deadly collapse. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident and whether any warning signs or recommended safety measures were not acted upon.

Nahman Tuvul, a volunteer with the United Hatzalah who responded to the scene, said rescuers initially believed they were responding to a construction accident before discovering that a residential balcony had collapsed onto the roof of the business below. He described the arrival of Levit’s grandchildren at the scene as one of the most difficult moments of the rescue effort, saying they witnessed their grandfather trapped beneath the debris.
