House Republicans Advance Bill to Ban Congressional Stock Trading
WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews)-House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Tuesday that House Republicans are moving to pass the “Stop Insider Trading Act,” which would prohibit members of Congress from purchasing individual stocks.
The legislation aims to address long-standing concerns about lawmakers potentially profiting from nonpublic information.
“Too often, Americans struggling to make ends meet have watched as lawmakers have entered office to leave as multi-millionaires,” Johnson said in a statement.
“The Stop Insider Trading Act does exactly what it says: It bans members of Congress from purchasing individual stocks from publicly traded companies, and it helps prevent public officials from profiting from inside information,” he added. “It’s a very logical thing to do.”
The bill would bar senators and representatives from buying stocks in individual companies while allowing broader investments such as mutual funds or index funds. Details on timing for a House vote were not immediately released.
The push comes amid repeated bipartisan calls to restrict congressional stock trading, though similar measures have stalled in past sessions. Critics argue that lawmakers’ access to sensitive briefings and policy deliberations creates an unfair advantage in the markets.
Johnson’s announcement positions the legislation as a priority for House Republicans as they seek to restore public trust in Congress.
