NEW YORK CITY (VINnews) – Continuing his campaign against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday renewed his call for the United States to enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against the Israeli leader, declaring that Netanyahu is “not welcome” in New York City.

In a video posted Tuesday on the official New York City mayoral social media account, Mamdani said New York City lacks the legal authority to enforce the warrant but argued that the federal government should do so.

“It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant,” Mamdani said. “The federal government, however, does — and I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant. And I want to be equally clear: Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City.”

The United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court and does not recognize the court’s jurisdiction over its citizens or officials. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over allegations tied to the war in Gaza. Israel has rejected the allegations and challenged the court’s jurisdiction.

Mamdani has repeatedly criticized Netanyahu and Israel’s conduct during the war in Gaza. His latest remarks come after earlier comments that drew criticism from supporters of Israel and praise from some pro-Palestinian activists.

The comments are likely to fuel renewed debate over the role local officials should play in matters of foreign policy, which are generally handled by the federal government.

Netanyahu has not publicly responded to Mamdani’s latest remarks.
