JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Tisha B’Av marks numerous catastrophic events in Jewish history, but the most recent one was the disengagement from Gaza. Originally scheduled based on the secular date, when it was found to be Tisha B’av, Arik Sharon, who initiated the forced expulsion of the 10,000 Jews in Gaza, merely postponed it to the following day.

The suffering, pain and anguish of the residents of Gush Katif has been well documented but less investigation has been done on the effect it had on the thousands of soldiers involved in the disengagement and forced by the authorities to expel their brothers and sisters from their homes.

In a raw, jarring documentary clip, former soldier Idan Tzadok chose to go back to the people he had evicted and request their forgiveness for his actions. Now 41 and a father of two, Idan says that he is forever scarred by the horrific nature of what he had to do during the Disengagement. Idan sought to meet the people, to hear their stories and to confess his part in their tragic fate in order to somehow find closure from this painful aspect of his life.

“I murdered a region of land. I murdered people’s souls. I’m 41 and a father of two but I’m still stuck there,” Idan relates. (Subtitles are imprecise but give some explanation of the clip)

The documentary shows how Dr. Sudi Namir, as he is dragged out his home in Gaza, makes terrifyingly accurate prophecies: “They will throw Katyushas on Ashkelon, they’ll attack your communities, they will continue their terror in Israel.”
