NEW YORK (AP) — At a news conference Friday morning attended by New York City Comptroller Mark Levine, New York Attorney General Letitia James and other elected officials, Jewish community leaders called for hate crime charges after a man allegedly stabbed two people on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, including an Orthodox Jewish man, and criticized Mayor Zohran Mamdani over his rhetoric.

According to police, Raul Morales allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attacks Thursday near Central Park. The victims were identified as an Asian man and an Orthodox Jewish man wearing a yarmulke.

Speaking at the news conference, Eric Goldstein, CEO of the UJA-Federation of New York, urged prosecutors to pursue hate crime charges and called on Mamdani to “stop fanning the flames of hatred and division.”

“The consequences are not abstract,” Goldstein said. “They are playing out on our streets. But make no mistake, we are not going anywhere.”

Also speaking at the event, Mark Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, said he expects the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office “to fully prosecute this to the fullest extent of the law,” including considering hate crime charges if supported by the evidence.

Police continue to investigate the attacks and have not announced whether hate crime charges will be filed.
