JERUSALEM (VINnews) —  Rabbi Yaakov Aharon Farber, one of the leading figures promoting charedi integration into the Israel Defense Forces in recent years, passed away overnight at the age of 32 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

A resident of Givat Ze’ev and father of six, Rabbi Farber dedicated much of his public life to creating frameworks that would enable Haredi men to serve in the military while fully preserving their religious way of life.

He founded the Ma’alot Tzur project, a unique initiative designed to facilitate military service for members of the Haredi community under conditions compatible with Torah observance. Farber said his public work was undertaken as a mission entrusted to him by his spiritual mentors, the Belzer Rebbe and Rabbi David Leibel.

Following the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, Rabbi Farber intensified his efforts to develop solutions that would address both the IDF’s manpower needs and the unique requirements of the Haredi community. He worked to bridge gaps between military officials and Israel’s Ministry of Labor, insisting that any service framework include accommodations such as exemptions from standard military uniforms, strictly mehadrin kosher food, and regular Torah study.

In interviews, Rabbi Farber consistently stressed the importance of consulting rabbinic authorities and adhering to Torah guidance while seeking practical solutions.

“If people want to work things out, it can be done. You just have to want it. There is always a way to bridge the gaps if each side understands the other.”

The programs he helped establish trained dozens of charedi servicemen in engineering and technology professions while maintaining their religious identity and helping secure their future livelihoods.

In the final months of his life, members of the extremist Jerusalem Faction (Peleg Yerushalmi) demonstrated outside his home on several occasions in protest of his efforts to promote Haredi enlistment in the military.
