JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Shin Bet Director David Zini has warned senior Israeli officials that Iran and other foreign countries are attempting to interfere in Israel’s upcoming elections, according to a report by Israeli journalist Michael Shemesh on Channel 13 News.

According to the report, Zini has held a series of meetings with senior officials in which he warned of efforts to disrupt the electoral process.

Zini reportedly said that the Shin Bet is dedicating significant resources to countering attempts by Iran and other foreign actors to influence or undermine the elections. He described election security as the second most pressing concern facing the agency today, after the threat of mass-casualty terrorist attacks, and stressed that the Shin Bet would do everything necessary to prevent any attempt to interfere with the vote.

Officials who attended the meetings said Zini expressed that he is “very concerned” about the threat.

The warning comes after Kan News reported that the Shin Bet chief was scheduled to brief a classified Knesset committee on intelligence indicating possible foreign interference in the elections. Supreme Court Deputy President Noam Solberg, who serves as chairman of Israel’s Central Elections Committee, is also expected to participate in the discussion.

The briefing is set to take place before the Intelligence Subcommittee of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, which has convened a special session on efforts by hostile states to influence Israel’s elections. Representatives of the Shin Bet have been invited to present intelligence assessments.

According to the report, Zini will also present information regarding the agency’s ability to monitor covert financial flows intended to influence political activity within Israel.

The special meeting was called by Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman MK Boaz Bismuth, who earlier this month asked the Shin Bet to use all available tools to thwart foreign threats to the electoral process.

During previous committee discussions, representatives of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate said they had already identified indications of attempted foreign interference in the elections.

Last week, President Isaac Herzog also warned the public ahead of the upcoming elections, saying that Shin Bet Director David Zini and Central Elections Committee Chairman Noam Solberg had briefed him on various threats to the integrity of Israel’s electoral process.
