In a significant shakeup in Lakewood’s local election, Harriet Goldberg has withdrawn from the race for Township Committee, where she had been running alongside Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles, TLS has learned.

Instead, Goldberg has officially filed to seek reelection to the Lakewood Board of Education, where she is currently serving out the unexpired term of Moshe Raitzik.

Raitzik, meanwhile, is running for Township Committee on the Republican ticket alongside Committeewoman Deborah Fuentes.

With Goldberg’s withdrawal, only three candidates are currently running for the two available Township Committee seats in November.

Today is the filing deadline for candidates seeking seats on both the Lakewood Board of Education and the Board of Fire Commissioners. Goldberg officially filed today to remain on the Board of Education.

The Ocean County Democratic Organization now has until the end of August to select a replacement candidate to fill Goldberg’s vacant spot on the Township Committee ticket.

The general election takes place in November.
