In a rare diplomatic and interfaith encounter, a delegation of senior rabbis from across the Muslim world—including Iran’s chief rabbi—was received Monday at the Lusail Palace in Doha by Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to offer condolences following the passing of the Emir’s father and predecessor.

The delegation represented the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States and was headed by Rabbi Mendy Chitrik, chairman of the organization and Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Istanbul. During the visit, the rabbis conveyed their condolences to the Qatari ruler over the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Joining Rabbi Mendy Chitrik were his son, Qatar’s Chief Rabbi Eliyahu Chitrik, and Iran’s Chief Rabbi Yehuda Gerami.

According to the organization, the Emir thanked Rabbi Chitrik for the delegation’s visit and expressed his appreciation for the condolences offered on behalf of the alliance.

Also participating in the meeting were Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, as well as Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Khulaifi, Chief of the Amiri Diwan.

The Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States said the purpose of the visit was to extend condolences to the Emir, the Qatari royal family, and the people of Qatar following the death of the country’s former ruler.

The organization noted that it provides religious leadership and support to Jewish communities throughout the Muslim world, including serving the Jewish community and Jewish visitors in Qatar through Rabbi Eliyahu Chitrik.

Following the audience at the palace, Rabbi Mendy Chitrik expressed his gratitude to the Emir for hosting the delegation.

“My sincere thanks to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for warmly receiving our delegation of the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States,” Rabbi Chitrik said.

He added, “Grateful for His Highness’s support in ensuring Jewish life can flourish in Qatar and for enabling my son Rabbi Eliyahu Chitrik to serve the Jewish community and its many visitors.”
