President Donald Trump said the United States has temporarily suspended a broader military campaign against Iran to give diplomacy one more chance, but made clear that the pause will be short-lived if negotiations fail to produce results.

In an interview with Axios, Trump explained that he ordered a halt to expanded U.S. strikes so talks with Tehran could continue. He said the current discussions are centered on securing an agreement that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz while reviving negotiations on a wider nuclear accord.

“We are in very deep talks with Iran. If they don’t work out, we will go back to very strong military action,” the President said.

Pressed on how long he is willing to let diplomacy play out, Trump indicated that Iran has little time to act.

“Not much time. Either it goes fast or not at all,” he said.

Trump said he made the decision on Friday after countries helping mediate the negotiations urged him to hold off on further military action and give the diplomatic process another opportunity.

“All of the people that deal with Iran asked me: ‘Don’t fire,'” Trump said, adding that he believes Iran wants to reach an agreement.

Summing up his reasoning for pausing the strikes, Trump said, “Nothing gained, nothing lost.”

The President also pointed to the market reaction following the pause, noting that oil prices declined while stocks climbed after the decision to suspend additional military operations.

Trump is expected to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday, where Iran is expected to be a central topic of discussion.

“I am going to talk to Bibi about the fact that if I weren’t president, Iran would have had nuclear weapons by now and Israel would have been destroyed,” Trump said.
