A historic cry from our rabbanim to protect our hospital.
In one unified voice, the rabbanim of Boro Park and Flatbush have sent a powerful letter to elected officials, sounding the alarm over the proposed takeover of Maimonides Medical Center.
Under the current plan, Maimonides would become part of NYC Health + Hospitals, New York City’s massive government-run public hospital system. The proposed merger is being presented as a solution to the hospital’s serious financial challenges and is backed by billions of dollars in state funding. But many in our community are deeply concerned about the price we may ultimately be forced to pay.
For generations, Maimonides has been our community hospital. It understands the unique needs of the families it serves and plays a critical role in caring for one of the largest Jewish communities in the world.
A government takeover could mean losing the local control, accountability, and community responsiveness that are so essential to quality care. Decisions about staffing, services, scheduling, and patient care could be made by a vast city bureaucracy far removed from the families whose lives depend on this hospital.
Our concern is not about politics.
It is about patients.
It is about the mother who needs immediate care, the child rushed into the emergency room, the elderly patient who cannot afford to wait, and every family that depends on Maimonides during its most vulnerable moments.
The future of Maimonides cannot be decided behind closed doors. The voices of the doctors, patients, rabbanim, askanim, and families who rely on this hospital must be heard.
We cannot afford longer waits.
We cannot afford more red tape.
We cannot afford to let vital healthcare decisions be driven by politics and bureaucracy instead of the needs of patients.
The future of our hospital is in critical condition.
The community must stand together and demand a solution that protects quality care, preserves community accountability, and puts patients first.
