President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is considering temporarily withdrawing Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s nomination to become attorney general permanently rather than negotiating with Republican senators who are demanding changes to agreements involving the president’s family business and financial arrangements reached with the Justice Department.

Despite the nomination dispute, Trump made clear he remains firmly committed to Blanche, his former personal attorney, praising him as “a STAR” and indicating he is prepared to keep him serving as acting attorney general until Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina are no longer in the Senate.

“I have no objection to temporarily withdrawing Todd’s name,” Trump posted on his social media site. “If they do not do the right thing, and putting him back after Cornyn and Tillis are out of office.”

Cornyn and Tillis, both of whom are scheduled to leave office next year, have insisted on receiving written guarantees confirming the permanent termination of the “Anti-Weaponization Fund,” which was established as part of the settlement resolving Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service.

Trump’s remarks followed the Senate Judiciary Committee’s decision to delay a scheduled Thursday vote on Blanche’s nomination. Cornyn and Tillis, both members of the committee, have refused to support advancing the nomination until Blanche provides written assurances addressing concerns over the controversial IRS settlement that granted President Trump and members of his family protections from future tax audits.
