First Lady Melania Trump is leading a humanitarian effort aimed at reuniting Ukrainian and Russian children separated by the war with their families, with approximately 30 Ukrainian children safely returned since the initiative began last year, according to the White House.

The White House announced this week that five additional groups of children have now been reunited with their relatives. In the latest phase of the effort, five more children were safely returned to their families, bringing the total number of Ukrainian children reunited through the program to about 30.

The humanitarian initiative officially launched in October 2025 after President Donald Trump personally delivered a handwritten letter from Melania Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their summit in Alaska in August 2025.

According to the White House, the First Lady and her representatives continue to work with both the Russian and Ukrainian governments to facilitate the safe return of additional children displaced by the war.

In a statement, the White House said, “The First Lady’s leadership bridged political divides in pursuit of one humanitarian mission — putting the well-being of children above the conflict and reuniting families torn apart by war.”

Speaking about the initiative in April, Melania Trump said, “This is not an easy mission. I commend the leadership of both nations for working alongside my representatives and me to restore love and security to everyone who has been displaced by this terrible war.” She added, “Together, we can change people’s lives for the better.”

According to United Nations figures, thousands of civilians—including many children—have been killed since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with the past year proving to be the deadliest since the war began.
