The Orthodox Union’s Kashruth Division has issued an urgent directive to its nationwide network of mashgichim and staff, warning that disruptions in the kosher meat supply chain could create opportunities for fraud and calling for heightened vigilance when receiving meat products.

In a letter from OU Kosher CEO Rabbi Moshe Elefant, the organization said the kosher meat industry is facing significant supply challenges following two major setbacks: the temporary closure of a large kosher slaughterhouse in the Chicago area and the devastating fire at the Agri Processors facility in Postville, Iowa.

According to the OU, those developments have resulted in an unexpected shortage of kosher meat in the marketplace.

“Periods of limited supply can unfortunately create opportunities for dishonest practices,” Rabbi Elefant wrote. “It is therefore essential that every Mashgiach exercise heightened vigilance when receiving meat and meat products at restaurants, catering facilities, retail establishments, and food manufacturing plants under OU certification.”

The letter instructs mashgichim to carefully verify that all incoming meat and poultry bear the proper kosher identification and required seals before accepting deliveries. It also directs them to inspect packaging, labels, and certification markings for any irregularities.

In addition, the OU emphasized that certified establishments should receive products only from approved suppliers and distributors. Any discrepancies, suspicious circumstances, or irregularities are to be reported immediately to the supervising Rabbinic Coordinator before the products are permitted to enter inventory or production.

Rabbi Elefant stressed that maintaining the integrity of the kosher supply chain depends on the diligence and professionalism of every member of the OU’s kashrus team.

“The integrity of the kosher supply chain depends upon the diligence and professionalism of every member of our field and office staff. Your attention to these details is critical to maintaining the confidence that consumers place in the OU symbol,” he wrote.

Despite the current challenges, the OU sought to reassure its staff that it is actively working to stabilize the situation.

“We are working continuously with industry partners to identify qualified alternative slaughter facilities and to help ensure a reliable supply of kosher meat during this interim period. We will continue to keep you informed as developments occur,” Rabbi Elefant stated.
