A Montreal kosher restaurant burned down in a suspected arson attack in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police received reports at around 3:15 am of the fire at Nöam restaurant and the business next door, and spent several hours bringing the flames under control. Both buildings sustained major damage.

Montreal police’s (SPVM) arson squad is now looking into the incident as a suspected arson and has opened a hate crime investigation.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said he was “extremely concerned” at what appears to be an arson attack on Nöam.

“Antisemitism has no place in our societies, and we will keep working to root it out wherever it occurs,” he said. “Thank you to the firefighters who responded immediately at the scene.”

Nöam, an incredibly popular kosher restaurant that serves Italian and Mediterranean food in Montreal, was burned down last night at 3 am.

Jews must be protected from hate crimes

“Another day. Another attack against Canada’s Jewish people,” wrote Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party and the Official Opposition.

“No more talk. We need real action to protect Jews and other Canadians from the hate crimes the government tolerates on our streets.”

B’nai Brith Canada noted that while police have not established a motive, this incident comes against the backdrop of a “much broader failure,” whereby “governments have allowed a climate of intimidation, disorder and escalating threats to take hold around Jewish communities, leaving Jewish neighborhoods, institutions and businesses increasingly exposed.”

Canada has seen a spate of antisemitic incidents over the last few weeks, including attacks on kosher bakeries in Toronto, and antisemitic abuse against a Jewish family in a Montreal playground.
