JERUSALEM (VINnews) — An off-duty volunteer medic with United Hatzalah used a defibrillator to revive his wife after she suffered an apparent cardiac arrest following an electrocution during a family vacation in northern Israel.

The 26-year-old woman was cleaning a floor near Binyamina when an electrical cord reportedly came into contact with water, causing her to receive an electric shock. She collapsed and lost consciousness.

United Hatzalah provided emergency medical treatment to a 26-yr-old woman electrocuted while cleaning in Binyamina. After she lost consciousness, a volunteer used a defibrillator to restore her pulse. She was transported to Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in stable condition.

Her husband, a volunteer EMT with United Hatzalah, immediately began CPR and used the organization’s portable automated external defibrillator (AED) that he carried with him. According to United Hatzalah, the device delivered a shock, restoring her heartbeat before she regained consciousness.

An ambulance crew arrived shortly afterward, provided additional treatment and transported the woman to Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in stable condition for further evaluation.

The volunteer said that although he has responded to numerous medical emergencies, treating his own wife was unlike anything he had experienced.

“You act on instinct and rely on your training,” he said in a statement released by United Hatzalah, adding that seeing her regain consciousness moments after the defibrillator was used was an unforgettable experience.

United Hatzalah said the incident underscores the importance of equipping volunteer responders with advanced lifesaving equipment, including AEDs, which are carried by its nationwide network of emergency volunteers.
