A senior figure in United Torah Judaism reportedly proposed orchestrating a public confrontation with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in an effort to benefit both the Chareidi parties and Likud politically, according to political analyst Amit Segal.

Speaking Sunday following Netanyahu’s unusual remarks on the draft law, Segal revealed that an extraordinary conversation took place several weeks ago between high-ranking officials from United Torah Judaism and Likud.

According to Segal, “A few weeks ago, a very, very senior figure in United Torah Judaism approached a very, very senior figure in Likud and told him, ‘Let’s fight. It will help you, (it’s obvious why), but it will help us too.'”

Segal said the proposal stemmed from growing dissatisfaction within the Chareidi public over the political performance of its elected representatives. He argued that this frustration is one of the main reasons many recent polls show Chareidi parties losing support ahead of the next Knesset election.

Referring to the political mood in the Chareidi community, Segal said, “Among the Chareidim, one of the reasons you see in most polls that their representation is declining ahead of the next Knesset is because many people in the Chareidi street are convinced that their members of Knesset have disappointed them.”

He said that disappointment has been fueled by government policies affecting municipal property taxes, daycare funding, and housing, adding, “Therefore, such a war is also good for United Torah Judaism.”

Segal concluded by noting that he does not know how Likud responded to the proposal but suggested that recent developments may indicate a shift in strategy. “I don’t know what Likud’s response was, but today you can already see Netanyahu changing direction and saying there will not be a second law freezing arrests.”
