A break-in at the former Christa McAuliffe Middle School on Thursday evening has escalated into a police investigation of a possible bias incident after a group of approximately seven teenagers or young adults allegedly entered the building, broke a window and left behind a series of hateful messages, including Nazi and racist imagery, TLS has learned.

The incident occurred Thursday, July 30, at the former school, located at 35 South Hope Chapel Road. According to information obtained by TLS about the incident, the group entered the building and caused property damage before scrawling messages across a blackboard, including “Heil Hitler,” a swastika and a racial slur directed at Black people.

The hateful messages distinguish the incident from an ordinary act of vandalism or youthful mischief and have raised concerns that the perpetrators specifically intended to send a message of hate.

The former middle school has additional significance in the Jewish community because the property was recently purchased by Beth Medrash Govoha (BMG), the large Jewish Talmudic College (Yeshiva) based in neighboring Lakewood. The incident therefore comes amid heightened concern over what community members describe as a troubling pattern of antisemitic and other hate-related incidents in Jackson.

There have reportedly been three recent, separate incidents in which windows at a building occupied by another Jewish organization were shot out with a pellet gun. There have also been reports of swastikas being drawn or displayed at Jewish establishments, along with other incidents involving hate speech, bias or antisemitic imagery.

The incidents have occurred against the backdrop of increasingly heated rhetoric concerning Jackson’s Jewish community. In recent weeks, inflammatory and, according to community members, openly antisemitic comments have been made at public Township Council meetings and in other venues throughout the township.

Concerned community leaders emphasize that while residents have a constitutional right to express even deeply offensive opinions, there is a growing concern that repeated public demonization of a religious or ethnic community can create an atmosphere in which acts of harassment, intimidation and violence become more likely.

Since the individuals involved in the recent hate incident have not yet been identified, it isn’t possible to ascertain at this time whether the individuals who vandalized the former school were directly connected to any particular speaker, organization or public meeting. Nevertheless, the timing and apparent escalation of the incidents have prompted concerns among community members that increasingly hostile rhetoric should not be viewed in isolation from acts of intimidation and violence directed at Jewish institutions.

Law enforcement is reviewing surveillance-camera footage from the former school in an effort to identify the individuals responsible. Investigators are also looking for witnesses or anyone who may have information about the group, which is believed to have consisted of approximately seven teens or young adults. The investigation remains ongoing.

For members of Jackson’s Jewish community, the incident at the former McAuliffe Middle School is particularly unsettling given the property’s new connection to a major Jewish institution and the reports of other recent incidents targeting Jewish facilities.

“The episode also serves as a reminder of the potential consequences when hateful rhetoric becomes normalized in public discourse,’ community activists told TLS. “Free speech is a fundamental right, but community leaders and residents alike face the responsibility of ensuring that political disagreement does not descend into the demonization of an entire religious or ethnic group.”
