JERUSALEM (VINnews) — An Israeli nonprofit said about 50 young adults living with cancer were delayed overnight in Switzerland after their return flight to Israel was disrupted by bad weather, forcing the group to spend hours at Geneva Airport before accommodations were arranged.

The travelers were returning from a therapeutic trip to the Swiss Alps organized by Connected Plus, which provides programs and support for Israelis ages 20 to 40 coping with cancer.

The group’s flight, operated by Arkia, was unable to depart as scheduled after weather-related conditions caused the aircraft to divert to Lyon, France, according to the organization’s chief executive, Yaakov Hershkowitz.

Hershkowitz said participants, accompanied by medical staff and volunteers, remained at Geneva Airport for several hours before learning they would not be leaving that night. The group was later transferred to a hotel in the early morning.

He said obtaining kosher food for the religiously observant travelers proved difficult overnight, with meals ultimately arranged through assistance from members of Geneva’s Jewish community.

Because the group included cancer patients and an accompanying medical team, organizers said finding accommodations and transportation for everyone presented logistical challenges.

The flight was rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Hershkowitz said the delay caused some participants to miss planned medical appointments in Israel, although staff and volunteers continued providing care and support throughout the disruption.

Arkia had not issued a public statement on the incident as of Tuesday.
