MIAMI (VINnews) — A South Florida woman is facing felony charges after authorities said she attacked a Jewish man inside a Starbucks located in a Target store while shouting antisemitic remarks.

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon at a Target store in North Miami Beach, according to police.

Investigators identified the suspect as 43-year-old Chyvonne Juanita Palmer of North Miami.

Police said the victim was sitting in the Starbucks area wearing a yarmulke, also known as a kippah, when Palmer approached him and allegedly struck him twice with a cellphone without provocation.

According to investigators, Palmer briefly returned to her seat before escalating the confrontation by picking up a metal chair and attempting to strike the man while repeatedly making antisemitic statements. Two bystanders intervened before anyone was hit with the chair and escorted the victim to safety until officers arrived.

Palmer was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with prejudice, and disorderly conduct.

Following her initial court appearance, a judge ordered that Palmer be released to a mental health facility for evaluation. Court records show she later posted bond and was released while the case proceeds.

In a statement, Target condemned the incident, saying the safety of its customers and employees is a top priority and that the company is cooperating with law enforcement.

The investigation remains ongoing.
