NEW YORK (VINnews) — The New York City Council is launching a broad effort to address safety concerns involving electric bikes, with lawmakers proposing new regulations, increased oversight and a review of current enforcement practices.

Council leaders announced plans to hold a hearing next month to examine how existing e-bike laws are being enforced and whether additional legislation is needed to reduce crashes and improve pedestrian safety.

Among the measures under consideration are proposals to increase oversight of app-based delivery companies by requiring them to register with the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. Another bill would require delivery platforms to collect and maintain information about riders to assist with enforcement efforts.

Council members said additional proposals expected later this year could address issues including illegal high-speed e-bikes, insurance requirements, street design and traffic enforcement.

Lawmakers said the goal is to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and delivery workers while ensuring companies that rely on delivery services share responsibility for promoting safe riding practices.

The legislative package comes amid continued concerns over e-bike-related crashes and calls for stronger enforcement of existing traffic laws across New York City.
