New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday that his administration has launched a broad effort to stop the online sale of illegal high-speed e-bikes and e-scooters to city residents, sending cease-and-desist letters to dozens of retailers serving customers across all five boroughs.

Speaking at a City Hall news conference, Mamdani said the city has notified 42 online retailers that they must immediately halt sales of high-speed e-bikes, stand-up e-scooters, and other vehicles that are prohibited from operating on New York City streets.

The letters direct the companies to stop selling the devices to customers in all 175 New York City ZIP codes.

The mayor’s announcement comes as the City Council weighs a package of 17 bills designed to tighten restrictions on illegal e-bikes and prohibit the sale of certain high-speed models that are currently legal.

Among the proposed measures are requirements that food delivery companies obtain commercial licenses and that delivery apps carry additional liability insurance.

The legislative push follows last week’s fatal crash near City Hall in which a 17-year-old riding an illegal high-speed e-bike was killed.

On Tuesday, City Council Speaker Julie Menin pointed to a sharp increase in crashes involving e-bikes and e-scooters as she urged action.

“Compared to last year, both e-bike and e-scooter collisions are up more than 30%. In 2026 alone, there have already been over 500 collisions involving e-bikes. We cannot go on like this,” Menin said.

The City Council is scheduled to hold its next hearing on the proposed e-bike safety legislation on Sept. 30.
