NEW YORK (AP) — New York City has activated its heat and flash flood emergency plans as temperatures are expected to approach 100 degrees Thursday and severe thunderstorms threaten the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory through Friday evening, with heat index values near 100 degrees and the potential for heavy rain and localized flooding.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city is opening hundreds of cooling centers, expanding Code Red outreach to homeless residents, clearing catch basins, deploying emergency crews and extending hours at outdoor pools.

Officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, check on elderly and vulnerable neighbors, and avoid flooded streets, downed power lines and fallen trees during storms.

The city also advised residents of basement apartments to prepare for possible flooding and encouraged New Yorkers to sign up for Notify NYC emergency alerts.
