Fetterman Defends Israel Support as Red Line in Tense Exchange With Jon Stewart

Aug 7, 2026·2 min read

WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews)-Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman clashed with comedian and “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart over the Democratic Party’s growing hostility toward Israel, declaring support for the Jewish state a nonnegotiable “red line” even as progressive voices push the party in the opposite direction.

In an appearance on Stewart’s “The Weekly Show” podcast, Stewart pressed Fetterman on his insistence that he would leave the Democratic Party if it became openly anti-Israel.

“So, you could agree with them 90%, but Israel is the red line?” Stewart asked.

“Absolutely. I can’t ever turn my back to Israel after where it’s at,” Fetterman replied.

Stewart continued: “You’re saying that these candidates may have great ideas for our economy. They may want to do the exact same thing you want to do, in terms of getting money out of politics. They may want to increase the social safety net. They may want to change the balance of power from capital back to labor, but if they don’t agree with you on Israel, you don’t want them in your party?”

He added that he found Fetterman’s stance “weird,” noting, “You’re literally saying, ‘We can all have discussions, except when it comes to Israel,’ which is not America.”

Fetterman pushed back firmly. “Well, I don’t think that’s weird. I think what history demonstrates is that when people or governments turn their back to the Jewish community, things end really badly.”

Stewart responded that “the Jewish community and Israel are not the same thing.”

The exchange highlighted deepening divisions within the Democratic Party over Israel. Fetterman, one of the few prominent Democrats who has maintained strong support for the Jewish state amid rising progressive criticism, has previously said that an official shift by the party against Israel would be his breaking point for leaving.

The Republican Jewish Coalition praised Fetterman for his stance, stating: “Here’s some free advice, for a Democratic Party that has totally lost its mind and is hemorrhaging Jewish support: don’t be a clown like Jon Stewart, have some guts like John Fetterman.”

Fetterman has repeatedly criticized elements of his party for embracing candidates and rhetoric hostile to Israel, including references to Democratic Socialists of America-aligned figures and statements from other Democrats that he has called inaccurate and dangerous.
