[Video below.] Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed pushed back Sunday after President Trump shared a social media post contrasting the president and first lady Melania Trump with El-Sayed and his wife, calling it a reflection of two competing visions for the country.

The post, shared on Truth Social on Shabbos, featured two side-by-side photographs. One showed President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, while the other showed El-Sayed and his wife. Above the images were the words, “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.” Trump’s name appeared above his own photograph, while El-Sayed’s full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, appeared above the image of the Michigan Democrat and his wife.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” host Jake Tapper asked El-Sayed to respond to the president’s post.

“Yeah, he’s right. One in which your overlords are two people who don’t like each other but joint in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you, or two people who genuinely love each other, enjoyed some pancakes together, want to come together to build the kind of America where they can raise a family, and know that that family is going to have the good things.” El-Sayed said, referencing the actions from the post.

El-Sayed argued that the exchange highlighted what he sees as two fundamentally different political philosophies.

“So yes, you’ve got two different visions of America. Donald Trump’s vision is the one you’re living in right now. Can you afford your gas? Can you afford your groceries? Do you believe, when you look your kids in the eye, that they’re going to have a better future than you did?” he added.

El-Sayed, a leading progressive voice within the Democratic Party, narrowly defeated moderate Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens in last week’s Michigan Senate primary. His victory has been viewed as a significant test of the ideological direction of the Democratic Party heading into the general election.
