Homicide Suspect Who Prompted Massive Manhunt in Orange County Apprehended

Aug 9, 2026·2 min read

Orange County, NY (VINnews) – A homicide suspect who prompted a massive, multi-day manhunt in Orange County was safely apprehended early Sunday after authorities received a tip that led investigators to a vehicle connected to the case, New York State Police said.

Thomas D. Ryan was wanted in connection with the Aug. 6 killing of his father, Robert Ryan, 70, at his residence on Greenville Turnpike in the town of Greenville.

Ryan was taken into custody at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday by the New York State Police Special Operations Response Team in the town of Gilboa in Schoharie County, about 100 miles northwest of Greenville.

The search intensified Saturday evening after police received a tip that a Toyota Prius associated with the investigation had been found unoccupied in a parking lot on State Route 990V in Gilboa. Officers from multiple agencies searched the surrounding area before another tip helped lead police to Ryan.

Ryan was treated at the scene for injuries sustained before his apprehension and was taken to a hospital, where he remained in stable condition Sunday. He remained in State Police custody and is expected to be charged and arraigned when his medical condition permits.

Investigators said Ryan did not live with his father and had no known current ties to the Greenville community. They also determined that he had lived a transient lifestyle and had stayed at shelters in New York City, Long Island and northern New York.

The investigation was led by the State Police Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation, with assistance from multiple State Police troops and local, state and federal agencies, including the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, NYPD, New York State Park Police and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police and Forest Rangers.

Authorities credited members of the public with providing information that helped locate Ryan.

“The information provided by alert members of the public, combined with the relentless efforts of our investigators, Troopers, and law enforcement partners across multiple jurisdictions, allowed us to locate Thomas Ryan and bring this search to a safe conclusion,” Troop F BCI Capt. Brad Natalizio said.

The investigation remains ongoing. State Police said additional information about Ryan’s apprehension and criminal charges will be released when appropriate.
