WASHINGTON D.C  (VINnews)-President Trump announced Tuesday that American citizen and former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman is returning home from Russia after more than four years in detention.

Gilman, 32, was imprisoned in 2022 during the Biden administration following his arrest in Voronezh on charges of assaulting a police officer. His sentence was later extended. Trump said Russia agreed to free him on humanitarian grounds after discussions with President Vladimir Putin, with no prisoner exchange required.

“I am proud to announce that American Citizen Robert Gilman, a former United States Marine, is coming HOME!” Trump said in a statement. “After my discussions with President Vladimir Putin, Russia has agreed to release him, very much on a Humanitarian Basis. We appreciate this decision, and the fact that Russia asked for no one in return — No exchange took place.”

Gilman was scheduled to land Tuesday night at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., accompanied by U.S. representatives and his mother, Nancy. Trump said he spoke with Gilman, who requested a cheeseburger upon arrival.

Trump credited members of his team, including Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for Hostage Response Adam Boehler, Senior Director for Counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka and Jared Kushner, among others.

The president highlighted his administration’s efforts to secure the return of Americans detained abroad, stating that hundreds have been brought home and that non-Americans held in various countries have also been freed.

Gilman’s health had deteriorated in recent months, with advocates reporting he had been in a serious condition, including periods of unresponsiveness. U.S. officials had pressed for his release on humanitarian grounds.

Trump concluded: “Robert Gilman has been reunited with his wonderful mother, Nancy, who is also on the plane with him, and will soon get to see all of his loved ones. … GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
