NEW YORK (VINnews) — The man accused of storming into Manhattan’s Central Synagogue during Shabbat services allegedly told police that Jewish worshippers were “swine” and “fake Jews,” prosecutors said at his arraignment Saturday night.

According to a New York Post report, Larry Montes, 46, of the Bronx, was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond after appearing in Manhattan Criminal Court. Prosecutors had sought substantially higher bail.

Prosecutors said Montes acknowledged that his actions were motivated by hostility toward Jews and also admitted to racial animus toward Black people. He allegedly told investigators that he acted “on instinct” because he was angry.

Police allege Montes entered Central Synagogue around 6 p.m. Friday and disrupted the service before allegedly throwing religious candle holders, striking a 63-year-old congregant and confronting a 65-year-old security guard who intervened.

Montes faces multiple hate-crime charges, including assault and aggravated harassment, as well as criminal mischief. A judge issued orders of protection for the two victims.

The suspect is scheduled to return to court Aug. 20.
