Scion of one of the greatest dynasties of Galician chassidus, Rav Yisrael Shapira (1889-1989), the Bluzhov Rebbe, was a great prewar leader in his own merit, with a prestigious rabbinical position and many followers prior to the war. Losing everything during the Holocaust - family, community, followers - and enduring six years of torment, torture and suffering in numerous Nazis camps, the Bluzhov Rebbe rebuilt in the United States after the war. He related many of his Holocaust experiences to Dr. Yaffa Eliach in the 1970’s, and she duly published them in her monumental work Hasidic Tales of the Holocaust. Many of those stories have become classics of Orthodox Holocaust storytelling. The Bluzhov Rebbe’s stories continue to inspire for generations to come.
