Big changes are coming to Maimonides Hospital. Svetlana Lipyanskaya, currently the CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, is set to become the new Chief Executive Officer of Maimonides Health. The appointment is pending final approval of a major partnership between Maimonides and NYC Health + Hospitals.
The move means Lipyanskaya would take over from Kenneth D. Gibbs, who has been serving as President and CEO of Maimonides.
This leadership transition comes as Maimonides prepares to officially join the NYC Health + Hospitals system, a partnership backed by $2.2 billion in state funding over five years. According to reports, there will be no changes to patient care during the transition. Maimonides will continue providing the wide range of specialty and subspecialty services it is known for in this part of Brooklyn. Patients are also expected to gain expanded digital access to medical records through the MyChart system once the partnership is finalized.
Lipyanskaya has led South Brooklyn Health since 2020, guiding the hospital through the COVID-19 pandemic and overseeing the opening of a new 11-story, $923 million inpatient facility. Under her leadership, the hospital improved quality grades and reduced serious hospital-acquired infections.
She grew up in Brooklyn after immigrating from Odessa, Ukraine, and has spent years in leadership roles within the city’s public healthcare system. As part of the transition, Manjinder Kaur, currently Chief Operating Officer at South Brooklyn Health, would step in as CEO there.
This marks a major shift in the future direction of Maimonides - one that could reshape how healthcare is delivered in Brooklyn for years to come.
