The Chase Freedom Flex Mastercard is an excellent no annual fee card thanks to its quarterly 5% categories. While the rewards are marketed as 5% cash back, you’ll actually get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent, which can be worth much more than 5% cash.

The Freedom Flex also earns 5x points on Chase Travel and 3x points on dining and drug stores.

Unfortunately, the card’s cell phone protection will end after 9/19. That covers the cost of a stolen or damaged phone up to $800, if you pay the bill on your card.

There are other cards that cover cell phones, such as the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. That card comes with $1,000 of coverage if you pay the bill on your card, and earns 3x points on cell phone spending. Or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Venture X Business Card come with $800 of coverage if you pay the bill on your card, and earns 2x miles on all purchases.

In its place, the foreign transaction fee will be removed as of 9/20. That’s fantastic news, as the current 3% fee makes the card rarely worth using when abroad. Starting 9/20, you can use the card for dining and drug stores abroad to earn 3x points or in the rotating categories to earn 5x points with no foreign transaction fees!

We reached out to Chase to see if any other cards, such as the Freedom Visa or Freedom Unlimited, will have their foreign transaction fees removed, but the bank had no comment on other changes.

Back in 2020, US airlines removed change fees on all tickets departing from the US.

El Al shut down operations during the pandemic, and when they restarted, they removed change fees and allowed free cancellations to a voucher.

The free voucher program ended in 2023, but came back with a charge of $29 to add El Al Protect at the time of booking. The cost of El Al Protect went dynamic last year, with coach tickets costing between $20-$60 and business class tickets costing up to $100.

But next week, the other shoe will drop, when change fees will be added for tickets issued as of 12am Tuesday, Israel time.

If you book before 7/21, you’ll keep the current free change policy. However, if you make a change after 7/21 on a fully unused ticket, you will then be subject to the new rules.

In talks with a contact at El Al, the airline insists that this isn’t a cash grab. Especially on flights between the US and Israel, the airline has been selling every available seat. Close-in changes and cancellations are the only reason that flights don’t go out full, so this will help mitigate that and create more availability for travelers.

That’s a pretty charitable reading of the change, but it is understandable if there are indeed flights that are going out with empty seats. Perhaps a fairer system would be to continue to allow free changes up until a week or 2 before departure?

The El Al contact also notes that this change is competitive with other airlines in the market.

That’s certainly true in some cases, though not all. While United and Delta do have change fees for basic flights from the US to Tel Aviv, there are no change fees for non-basic flights. This policy isn’t competitive compared to that.

United does charge change fees from Tel Aviv to the US on most fares, but Delta, Air France, and KLM actually allow full refunds on flights from Tel Aviv to the US on all fares, up until the time of departure.

Of course, El Al has the upper hand now as US carriers have all suspended service to Tel Aviv. However, El Al doesn’t plan on removing change fees once US airlines return to the market. That’s not much of a surprise, as US airlines have been quick to cancel service to Tel Aviv over the past few years, and people will pay a premium for reliability.

Travel agents I spoke to are particularly annoyed by the change fees, as over the past few years, they have become accustomed to booking any available seat for clients and waitlisting them for sold-out flights. When the sold-out flight becomes available, the passenger is moved over for free. With the new system, that change would incur a change fee.

The new change fee will also certainly help the airline sell more Flex tickets and El Al Protect upgrades.

For a flight between NYC and Tel Aviv purchased in advance, El Al Protect costs $55, but will allow for free cancellations to a voucher up to 48 hours before departure, and the voucher can be used by anyone. Unfortunately, that won’t help much with changes, as you have to wait a couple of days or even a week before the voucher is issued in order to buy a new ticket.

It costs $135 one-way or $270 round-trip for an Economy Flex ticket for a flight between NYC and Tel Aviv. That will make changes free and refunds just $50 when done at least 24 hours before departure. It also includes El Al Protect, 2 full-size carry-on bags, and free extra legroom seating.

The airline doesn’t sell Premium or Business Flex fares, though with these changes, perhaps those will be added?

Currently, the ticket above allows free changes more than 24 hours in advance or $170 for changes within 24 hours. You can buy it now to lock in that policy, but if you buy a flight under the new policy, it will cost $150 to change in advance or $200 to change within 24 hours.

Currently, it costs $400 to cancel a JFK to Tel Aviv Economy Classic flight and get a refund:

And currently, it costs $270 to cancel a Tel Aviv to JFK Economy Classic flight more than 24 hours in advance, and get a refund:

Under the new system, the price will be harmonized in both directions. It will cost $310 to cancel for a refund up until 24 hours before departure and $400 within 24 hours.

It’s worth noting that by law, all flights departing from Tel Aviv are fully refundable within 14 days of booking (4 months for new olim, the disabled, and people over 65), as long as you cancel 7 business days before departure, subject to a fee up to 100 shekels.

El Al shared the following statement with DansDeals about the change,

“EL AL periodically reviews and updates its change and cancellation fees to reflect evolving operating costs and market conditions.

At a time when demand remains very strong and many of our flights operate at high load factors, frequent changes and cancellations reduce seat availability for other customers and make it more difficult for travelers to book the flights they need. The updated policy is intended to provide greater certainty and stability for both our customers and our operations.

At the same time, EL AL continues to offer one of the more flexible policies in the market. Customers can purchase EL AL Protect at a fair price with their ticket, providing additional flexibility and peace of mind.

In addition, whenever security circumstances require it, EL AL publishes a dedicated policy that provides customers with the flexibility appropriate for the situation, including change and cancellation options beyond our standard policy.”

I’m never a fan of more junk fees. I understand where El Al is coming from, but I do wish the airline could have found a compromise path to ensure that seats aren’t going out empty due to late cancellations.

Today, Chase opened their 9th Sapphire Lounge by The Club at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) by Gate D25. It’s open from 5am-10pm daily.

Earlier this year, United made headlines by announcing the Relax Row, which will be coming to all United 787s and most 777s starting early next year and rolling out over the next few years.

And United has now announced the launch of “Economy Plus Seats With Extra Elbow Room,” which are extra-legroom seats with a fixed tray table that blocks an empty middle seat.

That sounds better than business class on intra-Europe flights, which offers a blocked middle seat with standard legroom.

Alas, United is only going to have the seats in 1 row on the fleet of 50 A321XLRs that will arrive over the coming years. The plane will replace the 757 and operate transcontinental and on long and thin routes to Europe and South America. The plane will feature Starlink internet.

American’s A321XLR hasn’t proven to be very popular with travelers due to design flaws and configuration.

On American, the plane features 155 seats, consisting of 20 business class suites, 12 premium economy seats, 12 Main Cabin Extra seats, and 111 economy seats. All of the main cabin extra seats are exit row seats.

On United, the plane features 150 seats, consisting of 20 business class suites, 12 premium economy seats, 4 Economy Plus Seats with Extra Elbow Room, 32 traditional Economy Plus Seats, and 82 economy seats.

By offering a more comfortable configuration, United will also be able to save some dough. That’s because the FAA requires 1 flight attendant for every 50 passengers, so blocking off 2 seats means the airline will need fewer flight attendants. As the Polaris business class suites have doors, an extra flight attendant will be required, so that means the minimum staffing on United’s A321XLR will be 4 compared to 5 on American. United does note that on most international flights, it still plans on using 5 flight attendants due to the increased workload on those flights, but on domestic flights and some international flights, it will use just 4 flight attendants.

United is talking up the A321XLR a lot, and while it does have some nice features, it will still be a narrowbody plane flying internationally with herringbone business class seats angled away from the window. It will also have limited bathrooms, with 1 shared between the pilots and business class and 3 in the rear shared between premium economy and economy. It’s certainly better than American’s A321XLR, but it’s still not a plane that I’m going to try to fly on over a widebody.

A Home Planned Around Frum Family Life

One of the most revealing parts of architect Liran Shukrun’s thinking is the way he speaks about the home itself. A frum family does not always live inside the standard Israeli apartment formula. In many Torah homes, the center of gravity is different. It may be the dining room table. It may be the seforim. It may be the constant flow of children, guests, learning, meals, and Shabbos. A home like that needs scale, flexibility, and a different kind of attention.

That understanding shaped the apartments at Givat Hashalvah. The homes are large, open, and planned to adapt over time. Structural elements are kept away from the center of the living space wherever possible, allowing rooms and layouts to remain flexible as family needs change. Living rooms and bedrooms open toward the view, not through small, incidental windows, but through panoramic glass that makes the hills and courtyards part of the home experience. The balconies are large enough to live on, not just step onto, creating real space for hosting, sitting, breathing, and bringing family life outdoors.

That is what makes the planning feel so specific. Givat Hashalvah is not only responding to a market need for larger homes. It is responding to a way of life. The project understands that a home for a frum family carries learning, hosting, children, guests, privacy, flexibility, and daily rhythm all at once. The architecture was asked to respect that. Spend Threshold:

You can pay your federal taxes for a 1.85% fee. If you overpay your taxes you can request a refund or apply it to your next year’s taxes. If you paid $9,819 in taxes you would pay $181 in fees and earn $1,200 cash back and a $250 travel credit!

Business vs consumer card and applying for a business card

This business card won’t appear on your credit report. That’s good for several reasons.

First of all, it won’t count against your 5/24 count for opening new Chase cards. Only cards on your report that have been opened within the past 24 months count for that.

Second, when you spend money on personal cards your credit score will be hurt even if you pay your bill on time. A whopping 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization. You can pay off your card bill before your statement is generated to avoid that, but that takes effort and laying out money well before you have to. Additionally it’s good to have the statement close with a couple dollars to show the card is active and being paid every month. On a business card it’s just not reported, so you can wait until the money is due without it having a negative effect on your score. Maxing out your credit line on a business card won’t hurt your credit utilization ratio or credit score.

Third, if you close a business card it won’t ever have an effect on your score.

You may already have a business that needs a card to keep track of expenses. For example if your name is Joe Smith and you sell items online, or if you have any other side business and want a credit card to better keep track of business expenditures you can open a business credit card for “Joe Smith” as the business. You don’t need to file any messy government paperwork to be allowed to do that. Just be sure to select “Sole Proprietorship” as the business type and just use your social security number in the Tax Identification Number field.

1. Don’t get stuck in Honolulu. I’ve heard from too many people who spent an entire week and never left the city limits.  That’s just a shame, they may as well have gone to Miami Beach.  While I prefer The Big Island, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, and Maui to Oahu, there is still plenty to see and experience on Oahu as long as you leave Honolulu behind.
2. Don’t try to “do” several islands in a week. If you just have 4-7 days of vacation then you should stick to one island. There will be plenty to do to keep you busy and it will allow for some time to relax. There’s no need to add the stress of interisland travel just for the sake of “doing” another island. With 9 days or more to play with, it does make sense to experience more than 1 island.

As for which island is best, read on and decide for yourself!  If you ask 5 people you’ll probably get 6 different answers 😀

Starlink is a real game-changer in the skies, offering low-latency, high-speed internet that allows for real productivity and streaming in-flight like never before.

Airlines that add it have seen their Net Promoter Scores double. For now, airlines that have it have a competitive advantage, but pretty soon, airlines without it will find themselves left behind as passengers book away from them.

Until now, Starlink has required airlines to offer the service for free.

But the times they are a-changin’.

Panama-based Star Alliance carrier Copa currently doesn’t offer in-flight WiFi. They recently announced that they will be adopting Starlink fleetwide, but that it will come at a cost unless you have Gold or higher elite status or are traveling in Business Class. Interestingly, if you have Starlink Residential or Starlink Roam subscriptions, you will also receive complimentary onboard access.

That’s the first time that an airline has announced a charge for in-flight Starlink. Starlink, SpaceX, and Copa had no comment about this change.

And today, Frontier has announced that they, too, will finally offer in-flight WiFi, via Starlink. That service will begin to be deployed early next year. In total, Frontier and fellow Indigo Partners airlines (Cebu Pacific, JetSMART, Volaris, and Wizz Air) will install Starlink on over 1,000 aircraft.

The airline writes that it will be, “the first US airline to offer passengers access to Starlink’s high-speed internet through a new system managed directly by Starlink.”

My read of that is that the service will be at charge as well. That’s a shame, but I suppose it’s better than no in-flight WiFi. After having used Starlink in the sky, I never want to go back to an older system!

I don’t expect to see airlines rushing to change from free to paid Starlink as they’re likely under contract to offer it for free. However, we may see more airlines switch to a paid model over time.

Back in the good ole’ SPG days, we spent several vacations at the W South Beach. For 20K-30K Starpoints (or way back when I used free resort nights to stay here), it was a solid value, though that was before all the kosher restaurants moved up from Miami Beach to Surfside.

I checked how many points are needed these days, and wow. We have come a long way from when Marriott had an award chart and capped the top rates at 60K ot 85K points…

The W South Beach was renovated during COVID, but it will close on August 18th for renovations, and when it reopens in winter 2027, it will be reflagged as the Waldorf Astoria Miami Beach.

The W brand has been an ugly stepchild since the Marriott acquisition, while the Waldorf brand continues to gain new premium properties.

The switch will be a win for many people, as Hilton offers more valuable free-night certificates that are valid at all Hilton hotels. Hilton also waives resort fees on award nights, something that Marriott doesn’t do.
