Jul 12, 2026·2 min read

A potentially devastating house fire in Monsey on Friday night, was quickly brought under control thanks to the swift actions of one of the Monsey Fire Department’s newest probationary firefighters.

Sources tell Monsey Scoop that the incident began when a fire alarm activated inside the home shortly after the start of Shabbos. Family members searched the residence and discovered a fire in a guest suite, believed to have been caused by Shabbos candles. The fire department was immediately notified.

Before additional fire units arrived, the probationary firefighter, who was at the residence, recognized the danger and acted quickly to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading beyond the room of origin. His calm thinking and decisive actions significantly reduced the extent of the damage and helped protect the occupants and the home.

Responding Monsey Fire Department crews completed extinguishment, checked for hidden fire extension, and ensured the residence was safe before clearing the scene.

The Monsey Fire Department said the incident highlights the value of its rigorous hands-on training program. Although still progressing through probationary training, the firefighter relied on the skills and confidence gained through countless hours of instruction and practical exercises to make critical decisions during the emergency.

The department praised the probationary firefighter for demonstrating professionalism, courage, and dedication to protecting the community, noting that his actions made a meaningful difference during the critical first moments of the incident.
