MonseyScoop6 minutes agoThe Town of Ramapo has completed the rollout of its new electronic parking ticket system, making it significantly faster and more convenient for motorists to pay parking violations online.
Although the transition officially began on May 18, 2026, electronic tickets started being issued during the first week of June. Unlike the previous handwritten process, tickets issued through the new system are available for online payment immediately after they are issued.
Previously, handwritten parking tickets had to be filed with the court, manually entered into the system, and fine notices mailed before online payment was possible—a process that often took several weeks.
“Modernizing this process makes it easier and more convenient for residents to resolve parking tickets without unnecessary delays,” Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht told Monsey Scoop. “This new electronic system improves efficiency, provides immediate access to payment options, and is another step toward delivering better service to our community.”
Motorists who receive an electronic parking ticket can pay it instantly by visiting https://ramapony.rmcpay.com/
The Town noted that some agencies continue to issue handwritten parking tickets, which will still require several days to be processed by the court before they appear in the online payment system.

MonseyScoop2 hours agoThe Eruv of Monsey released its weekly inspection report ahead of Shabbos Parshas Devarim. Inspectors identified 24 issues across the Eruv system, including eight that required immediate repair. Officials confirmed that all sections of the Eruv are kosher following this week’s maintenance and repairs.
In the Airmont Eruv, crews cleared tree branches on Fox Hill Road after the Eruv string became caught while passing through a private yard, restoring the line.
In Chestnut Ridge, repairs were completed at two locations. Along Red Schoolhouse Road, a damaged 1-inch lechi was inspected and repaired, while on Cottage Road, two new PVC lechis were installed following a utility pole replacement by the utility company.
The Monsey Rambam Eruv remained fully operational. Along Union Road, officials noted that a deteriorating fence will continue to be monitored. In the Monsey Rambam 2 section, leaves tangled in the green Eruv string on Spook Rock Road were removed.
In the Spring Valley Rambam section, crews trimmed branches touching the Eruv string along North Main Street and cleared additional branches surrounding a lechi.
Along Route 202 in Wesley Hills, crews corrected a green Eruv string that had become tangled with a metal support wire.
In New City, branches adjacent to the Palisades Parkway overpass on West Clarkstown Road were trimmed to maintain proper clearance around the Eruv line.
Several maintenance projects were completed in Hillcrest. On West Clarkstown Road, inspectors identified a lechi with a gap near the top that remained properly positioned beneath the wire, while an Eruv string that had shifted to the side of the lechi was noted for repair. Crews also installed two additional lechis inside the tunnel, straightened two bent lechis along Alice Drive, and trimmed a branch near the railroad crossing to prevent future interference with the Eruv string.
The Suffern, Good Samaritan Hospital Rambam, Pearl River, Montebello, Spring Valley, Nanuet, New Hempstead, and Haverstraw sections were all inspected and reported to be fully operational.
Eruv officials confirmed that all critical repairs were completed ahead of Shabbos, ensuring the Monsey Eruv remains fully kosher and operational for the community.

MonseyScoop3 hours agoA routine traffic stop by the Ramapo Police Department’s Special Operations Unit led to the seizure of suspected illegal drugs and the arrest of a 29-year-old Tallman resident on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.
According to Ramapo Police, the incident occurred Thursday afternoon when an officer observed a Tesla commit several traffic violations on Route 59. Police said the driver used a left-turn-only lane to pass stopped traffic before accelerating head-on toward oncoming vehicles when the light turned green, forcing other motorists to stop to avoid a collision before the vehicle swerved back into the proper lane.
During the traffic stop, the officer observed several prescription pill bottles in the vehicle’s center console. After the driver allegedly attempted to conceal one of the bottles, the officer continued the investigation. Police said the driver admitted to sharing prescription medication with another individual.
The investigation led to the discovery of approximately 40 LSD tabs, a digital scale, a large psilocybin mushroom, two glass pipes containing suspected controlled substance residue, and an open bottle of vodka inside the vehicle.
The 29-year-old was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree, an A-II felony, Criminal Possession of a Hallucinogen, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, an A misdemeanor. He was also issued three traffic summonses.
Following arraignment in Airmont Justice Court, the defendant was remanded to the Rockland County Jail in accordance with New York law governing A-II felony charges.
Ramapo Police said the arrest highlights the importance of proactive policing and officers remaining alert during routine traffic stops, noting that careful observation can uncover serious criminal activity and help keep dangerous drugs off the streets.

MonseyScoop6 hours agoAn overnight effort by New York State Senator Bill Weber’s office helped ensure that more than 300 boys at the Rachmastrivka Mosdos were able to return to cheder as scheduled after an unexpected delay in the electrical hookup threatened to leave the campus without power.
As part of the school’s recent building expansion, Senator Weber’s office worked with school leadership and Orange & Rockland (O&R) to help navigate utility-related issues and coordinate electrical service for the new 10,000 square foot addition.
With the arrival of summer heat, increased demand for air conditioning placed additional strain on the electrical system, necessitating the completion of additional electrical upgrades before the expanded facility could safely operate at full capacity.
On Thursday morning, the electrical service was temporarily disconnected to complete the necessary electrical work. Knowing the classrooms would become unbearably hot without air conditioning, the school sent the boys on an afternoon trip, expecting O&R to restore service later that evening so the boys could return the following morning.
At the same time, Orange & Rockland crews were responding to widespread outages and storm damage from severe weather earlier in the week, leaving them stretched thin and delaying restoration schedules.
Because O&R arrived later than anticipated to disconnect the service, the camp’s electrician could not complete the required UL inspection and certification on schedule. Once the electrician’s certification was received in the afternoon, the school reached out to O&R to have them return to restore power. The school was repeatedly advised that an O&R crew was on its way to reconnect the electricity. By nine that night, however, it became clear the crew would not arrive, placing the next day’s school and camp session for 500 boys in jeopardy. With the boys expected to arrive the following morning, school officials contacted Senator Weber’s office for assistance.
Working throughout the night, Mort Becker, Senator Weber’s Deputy Chief of Staff and Communications Director, coordinated with Orange & Rockland officials after the required UL inspection was completed and was able to successfully secure an emergency crew to restore electrical service upon the boys’ arrival the next morning.
Senator Weber said helping constituents resolve unexpected problems is one of the most important responsibilities of his office.
“Our office is always ready to step in when our constituents need help,” Senator Weber said. “Since becoming your State Senator, I have advocated on behalf of constituents in more than 3,500 cases, and every one of them matters. I appreciate Orange & Rockland’s efforts under difficult circumstances following the storm, and I commend Mort Becker for his persistence in staying with this issue throughout the night until a solution was guaranteed. Thanks to the cooperation of everyone involved, 300 of the boys were able to return to camp safely and on schedule.”

MonseyScoop20 hours agoRockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh is continuing his Summer 2026 Justice Court Initiative with visits to local courts across the county, including the Village of Piermont Justice Court and, last week, the Town of Ramapo Justice Court.
The initiative is aimed at recognizing the important role Town and Village Courts play in providing fair, accessible, and impartial justice. According to the District Attorney’s Office, these local courts are often a resident’s first—and sometimes only—interaction with the judicial system, making professionalism, integrity, and respect for the rule of law essential to maintaining public confidence.
As part of the initiative, DA Walsh is meeting with judges, court staff, law enforcement, defense attorneys, and, when appropriate, defendants with counsel present, to discuss best practices and promote consistency and fairness throughout the local court system.
The District Attorney’s Office said the initiative emphasizes openness and transparency, with the goal of ensuring justice is measured not by convictions, but by reaching the correct outcome while strengthening public trust in the judicial process.

MonseyScoop21 hours agoThe Ramapo Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying two individuals who allegedly rode e-bike motorcycles recklessly and fled from an officer Thursday afternoon.
According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday, July 16, at approximately 3:54 p.m. A Ramapo Police officer was traveling eastbound on Route 59 in front of 7-Eleven when he attempted to safely move to the right to allow a Faist EMS ambulance responding to a medical emergency to pass.
As the officer moved over, two e-bike motorcycles reportedly passed on the officer’s right, blocking the maneuver. Police said the reckless driving continued onto Campbell Avenue, where one of the riders crossed over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic.
After the riders turned into the Bon Aire community, the officer attempted to stop them. However, both riders fled southbound on Bon Aire Circle toward the Village of Suffern. Due to concerns for the safety of the public and the riders, the officer did not pursue.
The Ramapo Police Department is asking anyone who recognizes the individuals or has information that could help identify them from the released photograph to contact the department at (845) 357-2400.
Police emphasized that community assistance plays an important role in helping identify those responsible for dangerous behavior and keeping local roadways safe.

MonseyScoop1 day agoThe Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) is urging residents to take precautions to protect their health due to wildfire smoke from parts of Canada and Northern Minnesota, which continues to impact air quality across the region.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the New York State Department of Health have issued a statewide Air Quality Health Advisory for Thursday, July 16, 2026, due to high levels of fine particle pollution in the air.
These tiny particles, called PM2.5, come from smoke, dust, dirt, soot, and liquid droplets. Because they are so small, they can travel deep into the lungs and cause health problems such as coughing, sneezing, eye, nose, throat, or lung irritation, or shortness of breath.
“Wildfire smoke contains fine particles that can affect everyone’s health, but the greatest risk is for older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, and people with heart or lung disease,” said Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Leahy.
“While we cannot control the smoke, we can take steps to protect ourselves and our families,” said Rockland County Executive Ed Day. “We encourage residents to limit outdoor activities today and check in on neighbors, seniors, and anyone with underlying health conditions.”
Residents are encouraged to:
AQI forecasts are issued by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The AQI is a color-coded system developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The worse the air quality, the greater the personal health risk and the increased need to take precautions. MonseyScoop2 days agoSenator Bill Weber, who represents Rockland County’s 38th Senate District, joined Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt and members of the Senate Republican Conference in urging Governor Kathy Hochul to take immediate action to allow New York to participate in a new federal school choice scholarship program established under the Trump administration.
In a letter to the governor, the lawmakers called on Hochul to sign the required advance election form, saying the move is essential for scholarship organizations and schools to prepare for the program and maximize available federal funding.
The federal initiative would create scholarships and educational stipends through a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 for taxpayers who donate to approved scholarship organizations. Those funds could then be used to help families pay for tuition at public, independent, and religious schools, as well as other qualifying educational expenses, including tutoring, books, internet access, and after-school programs.
According to the letter, participation in the program could direct billions of dollars toward scholarships for students in kindergarten through 12th grade while easing the financial burden on families at no cost to New York taxpayers.
“This should not be a political decision. It should be a decision about what’s best for New York’s public and private school children,” Weber said. “The federal Tax Credit Scholarship Program provides a unique opportunity to expand educational choices and ease the financial burden on families without costing New York taxpayers a single dollar. Every day we delay is another day we risk leaving millions of federal dollars on the table and denying families opportunities that are already being embraced by states across the country. I urge the Governor to put students first and opt New York into this program immediately.”
State Senator Steve Chan called the proposal “a win-win” for scholarship organizations, students, parents, and donors, while Senators Patrick Gallivan and George Borrello also urged the governor to move quickly, saying the program would provide meaningful financial relief to families and expand educational opportunities for underserved students.
The senators noted that Governor Hochul has previously expressed support for the federal scholarship program. They concluded their letter by urging her to sign the election form without delay so schools and scholarship organizations can begin preparing and New York families do not miss out on the opportunity.

High temperatures combined with elevated humidity will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, while an Air Quality Alert remains in effect for the region.
Smoke from wildfires burning in Canada is also expected to move into Rockland County and the surrounding area on Wednesday, creating hazy skies and potentially reducing air quality through Thursday. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions such as asthma, are urged to limit prolonged outdoor activity.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, take breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas, never leave children or pets inside vehicles, and check on elderly neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to the heat.
Anyone with respiratory conditions should keep medications readily available and follow their healthcare provider’s recommendations. Keeping windows closed and using air conditioning with clean filters may also help reduce exposure to smoke and poor air quality.
Rockland County cooling center locations are available on the county website. Residents are encouraged to call ahead to confirm a location is open before traveling.
Forecasters are also monitoring the potential for isolated severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The primary threats include damaging wind gusts and large hail. Residents should stay weather aware, monitor trusted forecasts, and be prepared to move indoors immediately if a warning is issued.

MonseyScoop2 days agoThe House has passed legislation that could make daylight saving time permanent.
For the Orthodox Jewish community, this is far more than a minor issue. During the winter, sunrise in New York could be pushed past 8:00 a.m., making it difficult for many people to daven Shacharis before work. Yeshiva students could also be traveling to school in complete darkness, raising legitimate concerns about safety and disrupting the daily schedule that many families rely on.
Orthodox organizations have voiced these concerns, and that advocacy is important. But it is fair to ask: why wasn’t the broader community mobilized before the House vote?
Why wasn’t there a widespread campaign encouraging people to call and email their members of Congress? Why weren’t buses organized to bring rabbanim, parents, yeshiva students, and working community members to Washington to meet with lawmakers?
Imagine hundreds of constituents respectfully visiting congressional offices and explaining, firsthand, how permanent daylight saving time would affect their families, their work schedules, their schools, and their ability to daven.
Private meetings and organizational advocacy are valuable, but elected officials also need to hear directly from the people whose daily lives will be impacted.
The legislation must still pass the Senate before it can become law, so there is still time for meaningful public engagement. Regardless of the outcome, this should serve as a lesson for the future: when legislation directly affects our community, the community itself should be informed, organized, and actively involved before the vote—not only after it.

MonseyScoop2 days agoA bipartisan effort to make Daylight Saving Time permanent is one step closer to becoming law after the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the measure on Tuesday.
Lawmakers voted 308-117 to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, which would allow states to voluntarily observe Daylight Saving Time year-round as a growing mass of lawmakers push to extend daylight into the evening hours.
“For decades, we have accepted this ritual of springing forward and falling back, even though it disrupts routines, throws off our sleep, and creates unnecessary frustration for families across the country,” Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla., said Tuesday, detailing how the clock changes have disrupted her infant son’s sleep schedule.
“Let’s stop asking Americans to reset their clocks every March and November,” she continued. “Let’s provide some certainty and consistency, and a little more sunshine at the end of the day.”
The legislation divided lawmakers in both parties, with members largely from coastal areas, such as Louisiana, Florida and New Jersey, supporting permanent Daylight Saving Time and others from the Midwest and agriculture-heavy states opposing it.
The measure now heads to the Senate, where its prospects remain uncertain amid skepticism from members of both parties. President Donald Trump, who has long called for ending the twice-a-year clock changes, is expected to sign the bill if it reaches his desk.
The White House urged lawmakers to support the Sunshine Protection Act in an internal memo sent to Hill offices Tuesday, calling it a “popular, common-sense reform.”
The proposal has alarmed Orthodox advocacy groups, which warn that permanent DST would clash with the fundamental halachic requirement that shacharis be davened only after haneitz hachamah. Under permanent daylight saving time, sunrise in New York would fall after 8 a.m. for nearly two months during the winter, and would arrive after 9 a.m. in cities like Detroit for several weeks. That would leave many working men unable to daven with a minyan and arrive at the office by 9 a.m., a conflict that would last for months rather than the narrow window of inconvenience under the current system.
Agudath Israel of America, which led the successful campaign against the last permanent-DST push in 2022, has warned that the change would cause many shuls to struggle to assemble a morning minyan and would force working Yidden to choose between davening b’tzibbur and their parnassah. The organization circulated a legislative memorandum on Capitol Hill at the time, including a survey of sunrise times in cities across the country and an analysis of zmanim by Rabbi Dovid Heber of Baltimore.
The halachic stakes were spelled out decades ago by Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, who in a 1971 teshuva sent to then-Agudath Israel president Rabbi Moshe Sherer described the extra winter hour of permanent DST as a crisis that would jeopardize the morning tefillos of observant Jews for months each year. The 1970s experiment with permanent DST was repealed by Congress in part because of widespread reports of children being struck by cars while walking to school in the dark, a concern that would immediately return if DST is enacted.
Trump’s position on the issue has shifted. In December 2024, he posted on Truth Social that the Republican Party should “eliminate Daylight Saving Time,” a stance that, while still disruptive, would have been less damaging to morning tefillah. He reversed course earlier this year, now backing permanent DST. The earlier effort to enact permanent DST passed the Senate unanimously in March 2022 but stalled in the House after lawmakers said they could not reach consensus, in part because of Orthodox community advocacy.
Sleep researchers and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine have separately argued that permanent standard time, not permanent DST, would be the healthier option, citing circadian rhythm disruption. The Health and Human Services Department under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been associated with that view, which has gained traction among supporters of the “Make America Healthy Again” movement.

MonseyScoop2 days agoKeren Olam HaChinuch has launched a major national initiative dedicated to strengthening mosdos, easing the tuition burden on families, and helping ensure that every child has access to a strong and stable chinuch system.
For years, mosdos have been absorbing growing scholarship deficits while stretching operating budgets, increasing fundraising efforts, and working tirelessly to ensure that children receive the Torah education they deserve. At the same time, parents have found themselves increasingly squeezed by rising tuition costs and the growing expense of raising a family. Keren Olam HaChinuch views these as two sides of the same challenge, requiring a coordinated communal response that supports both families and the mosdos educating their children.
Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach, Keren Olam HaChinuch is working alongside school leadership, rabbanim, askanim, parents, and donors, to build a national framework that enables each kehilla to develop practical, sustainable solutions based on its own unique challenges, strengthening mosdos through transparency, collective action, and long-term financial sustainability.
The effort began with its first School Leadership Roundtable, held in Rockland County, where more than twenty administrators representing a broad cross-section of Litvish and Chassidish mosdos gathered to discuss the realities facing today’s schools. Similar meetings are planned in Lakewood and additional communities, with each region shaping its own response within the shared framework.
As part of that effort, participating schools are contributing confidential financial and operational data that will be aggregated to provide a clearer picture of the true cost of Torah education. By presenting an accurate, community-wide picture while protecting the privacy of individual schools and families, Keren Olam HaChinuch aims to strengthen donor confidence, increase public understanding, and encourage broader communal support for local chinuch.
The Rockland County gathering marks the first step in what will become an ongoing series of leadership roundtables, community awareness initiatives, and collaborative efforts across the country.
Further details regarding future community partnerships, public awareness campaigns, and additional initiatives will be announced as Keren Olam HaChinuch continues expanding its work.

MonseyScoop2 days agoThe Town of Clarkstown has placed Engineering Director Michael Gianatasio on immediate paid administrative leave following an extensive internal investigation that led to a formal ethics complaint before the Town Ethics Board, according to a statement released Tuesday by Town Attorney Kevin Conway.
Conway said the investigation began last year after the town received a complaint from a town vendor regarding Gianatasio’s conduct. The town retained independent counsel to investigate the allegations and interview Gianatasio.
According to the statement, the Town Attorney filed a formal ethics complaint based on the investigator’s preliminary findings, which included what the town described as Gianatasio’s recorded admissions. The complaint alleges Gianatasio made overtures to Siemens regarding potential business relationships involving his wife’s business.
The investigation also allegedly uncovered approximately 17 instances in which Gianatasio failed to disclose personal business interests as required under the Town’s Code of Ethics.
Among the allegations, the town claims Gianatasio is registered as the “second qualifying agent for business” for C.A.C. Industries Inc. in Florida, using the company’s New York address, and failed to disclose that relationship while the company sought business with Clarkstown. The town further alleges he took actions in his role as Town Engineer that benefited the company, including working with the Highway Superintendent to repave a town road with a paving material not authorized by the New York State Department of Transportation and without Town Board approval. The town also states that C.A.C. Industries later bid on a multi-million-dollar project that Gianatasio oversaw.
Conway said the town believes Gianatasio’s alleged failure to disclose these interests and his actions while serving as Town Engineer constituted “a grievous breach of the public’s trust.”
The statement also rejects Gianatasio’s public claims that he is a whistleblower, asserting that his allegations against other town officials surfaced only after he became aware of the outside investigation. “Mr. Gianatasio is not a whistleblower,” Conway said, adding that the town believes the claims were an attempt to divert attention from the ethics investigation.
The Town Attorney’s Office also confirmed it has communicated its investigative findings to the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office and said additional information will be released after the independent Ethics Board completes its review.
The Ethics Board has the authority to recommend termination, professional misconduct proceedings, or referral for criminal prosecution if warranted. Town officials said they have full confidence in the Ethics Board’s independent process and will await its findings.
The allegations remain under review, and no final determination has been made by the Clarkstown Ethics Board.

MonseyScoop4 days agoYesterday, members of Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland participated in a comprehensive Mass Casualty Incident drill held in the Central District. The exercise was designed to put members’ emergency response skills to the test and strengthen the organization’s preparedness for large-scale emergencies.
A Mass Casualty Incident, commonly referred to as an MCI, is an emergency involving multiple patients and requiring a coordinated response from medical personnel, ambulances, dispatchers, and command staff. These incidents can present significant challenges, making realistic training and preparation essential.
During the drill, members were presented with a simulated emergency involving numerous patients with varying levels of injury. Responders were required to quickly assess the scene, establish command, triage patients, coordinate treatment, request the appropriate resources, and organize patient transportation.
The exercise tested several critical areas, including communication, scene management, patient triage, ambulance staging, radio operations, and coordination between responders, dispatchers, and command personnel.
Members were challenged to remain calm, communicate clearly, and make important decisions under pressure while working together as one coordinated team.
The drill provided participants with an important opportunity to apply their training in a realistic environment, evaluate current procedures, and identify areas where communication and operations can be further improved.
Following the exercise, members and leadership reviewed the response, discussed lessons learned, and evaluated ways to strengthen future emergency operations.
Training exercises such as this are an important part of Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland’s continued commitment to providing the highest level of emergency medical care to the community.
While everyone hopes that a large-scale emergency will never occur, proper preparation is essential. By continuously training and putting their skills to the test, Hatzoloh members are better prepared to respond effectively when the community needs them most.

Police responded to a welfare check at a home on Lexington Lane at approximately 10 p.m. Saturday, where officers discovered Russell Fraiman, 84, and his wife, Linda Fraiman, 83, deceased inside the residence.
According to Montvale Police Chief Douglas McDowell, first responders detected dangerously elevated levels of carbon monoxide and gas upon entering the home. Emergency personnel immediately evacuated the residence and located the two unresponsive victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Safety officials urge homeowners to never leave a vehicle running inside an attached garage and to ensure it is completely turned off after parking. They also stress the importance of installing working carbon monoxide detectors on every level of a home, particularly near sleeping areas.
The investigation is being handled by the Montvale Police Department with assistance from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, and the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office.

MonseyScoop5 days agoNew York State Senator Bill Weber today announced the introduction of legislation to designate a portion of New York State Route 306 in the Town of Ramapo after Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacobson Memorial Highway, honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of longtime Monsey Fire Department First Assistant Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacobson, who passed away following a lengthy illness at the age of 46.
During a shiva visit, Senator Weber informed Chief Jacobson’s wife, mother-in-law, and children that he had introduced Senate Bill S10659 to designate a portion of Route 306 in Chief Jacobson’s honor. The family was comforted by the idea of the lasting tribute, recognizing Chief Jacobson’s lifetime of selfless service to his community.
Chief Jacobson dedicated nearly three decades to the Monsey Fire Department’s Brewer Fire Engine Company No. 1, following in the footsteps of his father, who also served the department with distinction. During his 28 years of volunteer service, he rose through the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, and Chief, earning the respect of fellow firefighters, emergency responders, and the community he faithfully protected.
Known throughout the department by his radio designation “7-2,” Chief Jacobson was admired for his steady leadership, humility, and unwavering commitment to the safety of both residents and his fellow firefighters. In addition to responding to countless emergencies, he played a significant role in strengthening training, enhancing firefighter safety, and helping modernize the department to meet the needs of Monsey’s growing community.
“Chief Hugh Jacobson embodied the very best of public service,” said Senator Bill Weber. “For nearly 30 years, he answered the call whenever his community needed him, asking for nothing in return. His strong leadership, courage, humility, and dedication left an indelible mark on Rockland County. Renaming a portion of Route 306 in his honor will ensure that future generations remember a man whose life was devoted to protecting others and whose legacy will continue to inspire all who pass through our community.”
A lifelong Monsey resident, Chief Jacobson was widely respected not only for his leadership within the fire service but also for his character, compassion, and commitment to helping others. His passing was mourned throughout Rockland County, with firefighters, EMS agencies, law enforcement, elected officials, and hundreds of community members gathering at the funeral to pay their respects and honor his remarkable legacy.
When enacted, the legislation would designate a portion of Route 306 as Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacobson Memorial Highway, providing a permanent tribute to a man whose decades of volunteer service made Monsey and the surrounding communities safer.
“Chief Jacobson’s legacy is one of service, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to his community,” Senator Weber added. “It is my hope that this designation will stand as a lasting reminder of the extraordinary impact one individual can have through a lifetime of service.”

MonseyScoop5 days agoThe Rockland County Sheriff’s Office has officially welcomed its newest certified K-9 patrol team after Patrol Officer Tom Zinna and his partner, K-9 Stewart, successfully graduated from an intensive 16-week Patrol K-9 School hosted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
During the training program, Officer Zinna and K-9 Stewart earned New York State DCJS certification in obedience, tracking, article searches, handler protection, and criminal apprehension, qualifying them to serve as a fully certified K-9 patrol team.
K-9 Stewart, a 19-month-old German Shepherd imported from Hungary, was named in honor of former Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Chief Harry A. Stewart, whose 43 years of dedicated service left a lasting impact on the agency. Chief Stewart passed away in January 2021 following a brief illness.
The K-9 was generously purchased and donated to the Sheriff’s Office by Clarkstown resident Michelle Mattei in memory of her late grandfather, Hugo Dumke, who served as a mounted police officer in Germany. Officials said the donation strengthens the Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit while enhancing public safety throughout Rockland County.
This fall, Officer Zinna and K-9 Stewart are scheduled to continue their training by attending explosives detection school, further expanding the team’s capabilities in serving and protecting the community.
