ISRAEL ON ALERT: Three Scenarios Could Trigger IDF Entry Into War Against Iran

Jul 16, 2026·2 min read

Israel’s defense establishment is preparing for the possibility that the IDF could rapidly join the fighting against Iran under three specific scenarios, a senior security official told Walla ahead of Thursday’s weekly security assessment chaired by Defense Minister Israel Katz.

According to the official, the first scenario would be a formal U.S. request for Israel to participate in a major wave of strikes against Iran. The second would be Israeli intelligence detecting preparations by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to attack Israel, prompting consideration of a preemptive strike. The third would be a surprise Iranian missile and drone attack requiring a broad and forceful Israeli response.

The security assessment will be attended by IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and senior members of the General Staff. While Israeli defense officials currently do not identify an immediate intention by Iran to attack the Israeli home front, they believe Tehran understands such a move could trigger a large-scale Israeli Air Force campaign targeting strategic infrastructure across Iran.

The IDF Operations Directorate and Planning Directorate continue preparing for every scenario to ensure the military can transition from routine operations to full-scale combat without bureaucratic delays or the loss of valuable time. Meanwhile, the Intelligence Directorate, under Maj. Gen. Shlomi Binder, is maintaining heightened readiness across its units, while Maj. Gen. Itzik Cohen, head of the Operations Directorate, has instructed forces to remain on high alert against missile and drone threats.

At this stage, Israeli defense officials do not identify an intention by Iran, Hezbollah, or the Houthis in Yemen to attack Israel’s civilian population, but the military remains prepared for all possible contingencies.
