A man was killed Monday afternoon after a second-floor balcony collapsed onto an Angel Bakery branch on Keren Kayemet LeYisrael Street (KKL) in Jerusalem’s Rechavia neighborhood.

Large numbers of firefighters, MDA, United Hatzalah, police, and ZAKA volunteers rushed to the scene following reports of multiple victims trapped beneath the rubble.

Initial rescue efforts freed several people from the debris, including one person in serious condition and others with light injuries. Firefighters continued searching for additional trapped victims inside the bakery and beneath the collapsed concrete.

A short time later, rescue teams extricated an approximately 80-year-old man from under the rubble. Despite extensive efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Fire and Rescue Service, the collapse occurred when a second-floor balcony of a three-story residential building gave way, crashing onto the Angel Bakery below and causing extensive structural damage.

Police sealed off the area and closed surrounding streets while rescue operations and an investigation into the cause of the collapse continue.
