New Jersey American Water (NJAW) is continuing its Lead Service Line Replacement Program in Lakewood, with crews now canvassing homes in Census Tracts 7155.02 and 7155.03, including the Central Avenue, New Central Avenue, and James Street areas, to identify properties that may have lead or galvanized steel water service lines.
The ongoing effort is part of a statewide initiative required under a 2021 New Jersey law that mandates all water utilities identify and replace lead and galvanized steel service lines by 2031. A service line is the pipe that connects the water main in the street to a home or building, including both the utility-owned and homeowner-owned portions.
Residents in the affected areas can continue to self-identify their service line by submitting photos to New Jersey American Water or schedule a free in-person inspection, which typically takes about 15 minutes. The utility has been sending informational materials in multiple languages to potentially affected customers explaining the available options.
Authorized representatives from NJAW’s contractor, CDM Smith, may also visit eligible properties to assist residents. Canvassers will wear high-visibility vests displaying New Jersey American Water and CDM Smith logos and carry official identification. They will never ask for sensitive personal or financial information.
Officials emphasized that all inspections and any future replacement work are being performed solely by New Jersey American Water or its authorized contractors—not by Lakewood Township or any other government agency. The township is coordinating with the utility to help inform residents and support the program.
New Jersey American Water says customers may continue using their water as usual, noting that the water continues to meet all state and federal drinking water quality standards, including those for lead.
