Israel’s defense establishment is reportedly examining the possible purchase of Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft amid growing concerns that escalating tensions with Turkey could eventually lead to operational friction in the eastern Mediterranean.

According to Hebrew media reports, the proposal has been discussed in recent months as part of broader efforts to strengthen Israel’s maritime surveillance and anti-submarine capabilities. The P-8 Poseidon, operated by the U.S. Navy and several allied nations, is designed for long-range maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and anti-surface warfare missions.

The aircraft has an operational range of roughly 2,200 kilometers over maritime areas, supports aerial refueling, and is equipped with advanced maritime radar, acoustic sensors, electro-optical and infrared systems, as well as technology capable of detecting diesel-powered submarines. It can also carry torpedoes, anti-ship weapons, and naval mines.

Israeli officials stressed that the Israeli Air Force already operates the advanced Oron intelligence aircraft, which provides significant maritime surveillance and intelligence capabilities. A defense source said Israel’s current anti-submarine capabilities remain at a high level.

However, officials acknowledged that acquiring the P-8 would require a substantial financial commitment, making such a purchase unlikely unless it were included as part of a broader strategic agreement with the United States.

The reported review comes as Israeli defense officials grow increasingly concerned that increasingly hostile rhetoric from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government could eventually translate into military tensions. Although Israel and Turkey once maintained close military cooperation, relations have deteriorated sharply over the past 15 years.

Turkey now fields one of the largest and most capable naval forces in the Middle East and NATO, including more than 10 active diesel-electric submarines, frigates, corvettes, missile boats, amphibious forces, and drone carriers, while continuing to expand its fleet through both domestic production and foreign acquisitions.
