The United States is rapidly moving additional troops, aircraft, medical personnel and weapons toward the Middle East, giving President Trump expanded military options as he weighs a broader campaign against Iran, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

U.S. special operations forces have deployed to the region in recent days to assist with intelligence, tracking and targeting efforts. Fighter squadrons are being positioned at bases across the Middle East, while long-range bombers at facilities in the United States and Britain have been placed on heightened alert for possible missions.

The Pentagon has also moved aerial refueling tankers and additional fighter jets into the region, while military cargo flights continue delivering personnel, equipment and supplies to major American installations. The buildup is intended to allow U.S. forces to expand operations quickly if new orders are issued.

More than 150 military medical personnel have arrived at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, the main hospital used to treat American troops wounded in Middle East combat operations. Additional medical teams and evacuation resources are also being prepared across the region.

The large-scale movement of forces marks the clearest sign yet that Washington is preparing for the possibility of a wider and more sustained campaign against Iran, even as no final decision has been announced on the scope of future operations.
