The Rockland County Department of Health has issued a health advisory, sent to health providers and obtained by Rockland Daily, after a reportedly Monsey child who attended Viznitz Girls Camp in Fallsburg was diagnosed with Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), a potentially serious bacterial infection.

The case has prompted health officials to remind families about the importance of Hib vaccination, particularly for young children. Parents whose children may have been exposed are encouraged to make sure their child’s vaccinations are up to date and to contact their healthcare provider with any questions.

Hib is a bacterial infection that can cause serious illness, especially in young children who are not fully vaccinated. It can lead to infections affecting the blood, lungs, brain, and other parts of the body, which is why health officials closely monitor any confirmed cases.

The Department of Health said preventive antibiotics are not routinely recommended for everyone following a single confirmed case. However, preventive treatment may be appropriate for certain higher-risk children, including infants who have not completed their Hib vaccine series, children between ages 1 and 3 who are not fully vaccinated, or children with weakened immune systems. Preventive medication may be considered through July 29, which is 14 days after the infected child was last at camp.

Health officials also advised healthcare providers to review the vaccination status of children who may have been exposed and provide catch-up Hib vaccinations when appropriate. They noted that recommendations could change if any additional cases are identified.

Parents are urged to seek prompt medical attention if an exposed child develops a fever or other symptoms that could indicate a serious bacterial infection. Anyone with questions about possible exposure or recommendations for preventive treatment should contact their healthcare provider or the Rockland County Department of Health.
