The Ramapo Police Department conducted an increased number of drone patrols Thursday evening as part of its growing Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, while also enhancing security measures following the stabbing incident earlier that day in New York City.

Using its Skydio DFR system, officers launched numerous aerial public safety missions from two strategically located drone docking stations throughout the Town of Ramapo. The drones provided responding officers with real-time aerial intelligence, improving situational awareness and allowing police to deploy resources more effectively.

Police said the enhanced operations are part of an ongoing initiative by Town Supervisor Michael Specht and Police Chief Daniel Hyman to strengthen safety in Ramapo's business districts by providing an additional layer of aerial monitoring for officers, businesses, shoppers, and visitors.

In response to the New York City stabbing, the department also increased both ground and aerial patrols in areas with high pedestrian activity as a precaution. Officials emphasized that there was no known threat to the Town of Ramapo, but said the additional patrols were intended to provide reassurance while ensuring officers could respond quickly if needed.

The department said the continued success of its Drone as First Responder program demonstrates how innovative technology can enhance public safety regardless of an agency's size or budget. Ramapo Police have partnered with Skydio to expand the use of drone technology, which they say is transforming the way emergency calls are handled and resources are deployed.

Officials added that the department remains committed to combining proactive policing with advanced technology to better protect the community.
