TERROR PROBE: Six Indicted and Detained in France Over Suspected Synagogue Attack Plot
Six men were indicted and placed in pretrial detention in Paris over the weekend as part of an antiterrorism investigation into a suspected Islamist attack targeting a synagogue in Sarcelles, north of the French capital.
The investigation began after France’s domestic intelligence service received information about a possible Islamist attack against the synagogue. On July 11, police discovered a Toyota near a cinema containing a Kalashnikov-style assault rifle, a Beretta handgun and ammunition magazines.
The vehicle was found approximately 500 meters from the synagogue. Around 300 people were evacuated while bomb-disposal teams examined the area, though no explosives were discovered.
French antiterrorism prosecutors said the six men are suspected of helping transport the vehicle or participating in the supply or delivery of the weapons. However, investigators have not yet established whether the suspects knew the weapons were connected to the suspected terrorist plot.
Authorities are continuing to determine the intended target and identify the people who ordered the delivery of the vehicle containing the weapons.
