The MTA has begun a roadway resurfacing project at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, with overnight weekend lane restrictions continuing through early August.

The first phase of the project took place this weekend. Additional work is scheduled during the weekends of July 31–August 3 and August 7–10, when one of the tunnel's two tubes will be closed from 11:00 p.m. Friday through 5:00 a.m. Monday to allow crews to mill and repave the tunnel roadway and the Manhattan toll plaza.

The tunnel will remain open throughout the project, with one lane in each direction operating through the remaining tube while construction is underway.

Motorists should expect delays, allow extra travel time, or consider alternate routes if possible. The work is weather-dependent and may be postponed in the event of heavy rain.

According to the MTA, the resurfacing project will provide a smoother driving surface and freshly striped lane markings, improving safety and driving conditions for motorists.
