Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Ukraine of carrying out a strike on an Iranian ship at Israel’s behest, killing one soldier and injuring another. This attack “cannot go unanswered,” he said.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine had carried out “long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, including vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran.” He has also argued that Russia was supplying Iran with its Middle East satellite information to enable the regime to carry out precise strikes throughout the region. The Eastern European country has also sent military experts to Gulf countries to assist them with countering Iranian drone and missile strikes.
“Zelensky has attacked an Iranian commercial vessel, killing a sailor. A blatant U.N. Charter violation done at Israel’s behest to drag Europe into its war,” Araghchi posted on X, without providing any evidence that Jerusalem was involved in any way.
“In calls with E.U. High Rep. Kallas and FM Lavrov, made clear that what the freeloader in Kyiv did CANNOT GO UNANSWERED,” he added, referring to discussions with the European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas and Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov.
Tehran summoned Ukraine’s envoy for a lecture and said it considered the attack an act of aggression on the part of Ukraine to drag Europe into the war.
Yevgen Kornitschuk, Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, confirmed the attack.
“The ship we attacked in the Caspian Sea contained components for drones and missiles that were on their way to Iran, not civilian cargo as Iran claimed,” he declared. “This is not the first time we have hit such military targets, and of course, we can expect to hit them again. This is a legitimate military target in our view.”
