Toronto police are investigating suspected hate-motivated attacks targeting two locations of the Jewish-owned Kiva’s Bagel Bar early Sunday morning.

Officers were first called to the bakery near Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue West at approximately 8 a.m. after a window was found damaged by gunfire. Investigators located evidence that a firearm had been discharged, but no injuries were reported.

Roughly 20 minutes later, police responded to another Kiva’s location near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West, where a window had also been broken. Police found no evidence of gunfire at the second location, and no one was injured.

Authorities believe both incidents occurred sometime overnight. No descriptions of possible suspects have been released.

Toronto Police Duty Inspector Scott Bradbury said the incidents are being investigated as suspected hate-motivated offenses. The Hate Crime Unit, Guns and Gangs Integrated Task Force and local officers are canvassing both areas and reviewing available evidence.

“At this point, we don’t know what the connection is, other than that it’s the same Jewish-owned business chain and that it happened sometime overnight,” Bradbury said.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the incidents and said police would continue strengthening security around Shuls, Jewish community centers and other Jewish institutions across the city.

“Anyone that is committing a crime should be arrested and punished,” Chow said.

Noah Shack, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, described Kiva’s as a popular gathering place for Jewish families, particularly on Sunday mornings. He expressed relief that no one was hurt while warning about the potential for further escalation.
