Iran-backed militias in Iraq have warned Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa that they “will not remain silent” if he takes military action against Hezbollah in Lebanon, Kan News reported Monday evening. The groups also threatened to cross the border from Iraq into Syria in the event of an escalation.

Al-Sharaa continues to publicly signal that he does not intend to intervene militarily in Lebanon. At the same time, he has not ruled out nonmilitary involvement aimed at helping the Lebanese government deal with Hezbollah. Despite those statements, members of the pro-Iran axis do not trust his public position.

An Iraqi political official familiar with the issue told Kan News that the militias sent messages to Damascus stressing that if al-Sharaa chooses a confrontation with Hezbollah, they will stand alongside the terrorist organization. According to the Iraqi official, the militias fear that this is the direction the Syrian president is taking.

Al-Sharaa said Sunday in an interview with Al Jazeera that Syria is concerned about the deployment of Iraqi militias along the border, particularly groups that do not answer to the government in Baghdad. Iran, which backs the militias in Iraq, has also been attempting to send messages to al-Sharaa.

During the recent regional escalation, Iran struck the Al-Tanf base in the Syrian desert near the Iraqi border, claiming that American forces were present there, even though U.S. troops had already withdrawn from the base.

Kan News recently reported that Syria’s security establishment is preparing for the possibility of involvement in the Hezbollah issue, despite al-Sharaa’s public statements and his formal rejection of a proposal from President Trump to act against the organization inside Lebanon.

A Syrian security source affiliated with the government told Kan News that plans against Hezbollah in Lebanon are being developed behind the scenes and would be carried out if necessary.

“There is a gap between what is said publicly and what is taking place behind the scenes,” the source said.
