New York City officials have ordered construction to stop at 222 Broadway in Lower Manhattan after inspectors discovered cracks in structural concrete beams at the top of the building, raising new safety concerns at one of the city’s largest office-to-apartment conversion projects.

The building is undergoing a major redevelopment that will transform the former office tower into a 32-story residential complex with nearly 800 apartments as part of New York City’s broader effort to convert underused office space into housing.

According to The Wall Street Journal, inspectors identified cracks in two concrete beams on the newly constructed upper floor, prompting the Department of Buildings to issue a stop-work order while engineers conduct a more thorough structural evaluation.

The pause comes as city officials are paying closer attention to large-scale office conversion projects following the recent structural failure at the former Pfizer headquarters redevelopment in Midtown, where portions of the building buckled during construction. That incident has led regulators to increase oversight of similar projects to ensure they meet safety standards before work resumes.
